Meeting Detroit’s skilled-trades needs

pamela-moore-smCrain’s Detroit Business, March 16, 2014:  In response to the March 10 editorial “New arena another chance for local jobs,” the message to M-1 Rail and Olympia Development has been delivered, and the opportunities are not being ignored.

As the city of Detroit’s workforce agency, Detroit Employment Solutions Corp. staff members have been engaged with M-1 Rail and Olympia Development management teams for many months. We understand that Detroit will have challenges meeting the skilled-trades demand; however, efforts are underway to prepare a pipeline of workers.

Eleven percent of the federal dollars earmarked for the M-1 Rail project must go to certified minority businesses, women business enterprises and Detroit-based certified businesses.
