Mayor Bing recognized by the Detroit Workforce Board

Detroit, November 15, 2013 – Detroit Mayor Dave Bing attended the Detroit Workforce Development Board’s (DWDB) last quarter meeting as Mayor today at the Fort-Shelby Doubletree Hilton in downtown Detroit.
DWDB’s Chair, David Baker Lewis, opened the meeting by thanking the Mayor for his support of the Board and Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation (DESC) and the successful transitioning of the city’s workforce programs and services to a non-profit 18 months ago.

Ms. Pamela Moore, DESC President and CEO, provided the Board with an overview of progress and continuous improvement efforts. She particularly highlighted program efficiencies, cost savings, the opening of the new One-Stop Service facility at Northwest Activities Center, and the increased velocity and scope of services being made available to Detroit youth.

Mr. Richard Acosta, Director of One-Stop Services and Mr. Jose Reyes, COO of Detroit Employment Solutions provided updates on training and strategic direction, and also highlighted goals for 2014.
Mayor Bing thanked the Board and Detroit Employment Solutions for their hard work, congratulating them on their many successes over the first 12 months of operation and on the further progress that was now becoming apparent in year two. He also encouraged DESC and the Board to continue to engage with City Council over the months and years ahead and remain closely tied to the newly- created initiatives that will provide Detroiters job opportunities. He expressed his hope that the city of Detroit could continue to build on DESC’s success.
The meeting concluded with Ms. Moore making presentations honoring David Baker Lewis and Mayor Bing in recognition of their leadership and unyielding commitment to provide workforce development opportunities to the citizens of Detroit, and their support of DESC.

The Detroit Workforce Development Board will meet again in March 2014. All meetings are open to the public.
