Jasmine Trice was employed with Henry Ford Health System as a Clinic Service Representative earning $12.47 an hour. When she received an email from Henry Ford Health Systems (HFHS) human resources department asking employees if they were interested in Medical Billing and Coding and taking the ICD-10 class which came with a possible promotion opportunity, she realized her skills needed an upgrade.
Over 70 candidates responded to the email. After a short screening interview with Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation (DESC) ITA staff and account managers, assessments to test knowledge of medical terminology, reading comprehension, data entry accuracy and speed, and basic computer knowledge were administered. Passing those assessments, along with prior knowledge in patient registration and Health Insurance verification, confirmed Ms. Trice was a perfect candidate to receive the Medical Billing and Coding Training (ICD‐10) at Central Michigan University. During the training, she learned how services are coded and billed to insurance companies after a patient has been seen.
After completion of the training and passing the certification exam, Ms. Trice has been promoted to an Insurance Verification Specialist.
“It feels good to be able to connect this training to my other skills that I’ve previously learned.” ‐ Jasmine Trice
