Unemployed and seeking local employment due to transportation barriers, Gregory McKinley came to Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation (DESC) looking not just for a job but for a genuine opportunity to get onto a career path.
With over 8 years of experience in the maintenance and janitorial fields he realized that the opportunities in those positions were limited and offered little chance of advancement. He decided to try a different occupation, looking for a higher paying position in the production industry with opportunities for career growth.
Gregory’s Career Advisor, Veronica Marroki, found that he had been unable to secure a position even though he is highly skilled and his interview techniques are above par. He expressed his interest in switching occupations, and was informed about a hiring event through DESC’s Business Services Division with Detroit Manufacturing Systems (DMS).
After working to develop both his resume and his interviewing skills, he attended the recruitment event and was selected to complete a GAIN educational assessment and the required dexterity test, passing both. He was then referred on to Sam Alamat, the Account Manager working with DMS, who screened and assisted Gregory, coaching him through the rest of the interviewing process. As a result of this preparation, he was hired and now has a career in a local, high-growth industry as a production worker.
Mr. McKinley was thankful for the assistance provided by Sam and Veronica, as well as all the services provided through DESC. “I always knew I could do more. I guess I just needed a little help” he said.
