Auburn Hills employer fills 115 positions with help from DESC
When Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation (DESC) first talked with staffing agency Reliance One in 2012, the problem the company faced was clear. Finding candidates who were able and willing to come to their main facility in Auburn Hills to complete the screening process was proving difficult. But now, only 18 months later, DESC has successfully aided Reliance One in the employment of 115 Detroiters.
Reliance One had a number of openings available, but their most pressing recruitment concern was finding qualified candidates for ‘Test Driver’ positions. The position required employees to test drive vehicles and report on problems, perceived design flaws and other qualitative issues.
In addition to the ability to test-drive vehicles before they went on sale to the public, the position came with another key benefit – time flexibility. The availability of two specific shifts – early morning to mid-afternoon, and mid-afternoon until midnight – meant that employees could schedule shifts to take into account childcare requirements, continuing education, or even looking for additional employment.
DESC was immediately able to remedy the main problem by conducting screening days at Northwest Activities Center, one of their facilities in Detroit. Many jobseekers attending these screening events were also able to take advantage of other DESC services for the first time – services such as resume and interview coaching, employment readiness workshops, free internet access for employment-related activities, and individualized career advisement.
Proven success expands relationship
The success of DESC’s approach to sourcing applicants for Test Driver positions led to other opportunities. When Reliance One had a requirement for mechanics, a number of DESC customers were clearly a good potential fit but lacked the tools that would allow them to start a career in this field. DESC’s support services funding allowed jobseekers to obtain the tools they needed and many have now secured employment as mechanics through Reliance One.
As you would expect of a company that was voted one of the Top 100 to work for in Michigan, Reliance One actively looks for employees with ambition, promoting many originally recruited as test drivers to other more senior positions within the organization.
“I can honestly say that we are truly honored to work with DESC” said Chad M. Toms, Vice-President of National Accounts for Reliance One. “We feel that it is a true partnership.”
“Reliance One has shown itself to be committed to hiring Detroiters wherever possible” said DESC President and CEO Pamela Moore. “Building Detroit means building Detroiters, and their positive approach is a fundamental building block on which the city’s economic regeneration will stand.”
